Every year, Formula 1 enters a mandatory two-week summer shutdown, enforced by the FIA. In 2025, the break began on Monday 11th August, pausing almost all competitive operations. Teams must halt wind tunnel testing, car development, and factory-based race preparation.
Why the Summer Shutdown Matters
This break plays a vital role in modern Formula 1:
- Financial Control: The shutdown supports the sport’s budget cap, limiting the resources that can be spent on car performance and ensuring fairer competition.
- Staff Wellbeing: Perhaps most importantly, it guarantees that team members can fully disconnect. Engineers, mechanics, and support staff use this time to rest, recharge, and spend time with their families, knowing no one is gaining a competitive edge during the break.
The result is a healthier, more sustainable balance in one of the world’s most intense sports.
Opportunities for Facilities Work
While F1 teams stop performance-related activities, EPScm continues working behind the scenes. As a trusted Principal Contractor specialising in Formula 1 facilities management and infrastructure support, we are not subject to FIA restrictions. This provides unique opportunities for our customers:
- Essential Maintenance: Building repairs, facility upgrades, and site improvements can be completed without disrupting race operations.
- Non-performance Projects: Upgrades to R&D facilities and non-regulated areas progress without delay or added cost.
- Readiness for Restart: We ensure facilities are fully prepared so that engineers can resume car development and race prep immediately after the shutdown.
Supporting Teams at Full Speed
Although we cannot share specific details due to strict NDAs, all our Formula 1 partners know that while their factories pause, we remain in race mode. Our work ensures their facilities are optimised, reliable, and ready to support the push for performance in the second half of the season.
With EPScm’s support, F1 teams return from the summer shutdown at full speed — on and off the track.
